Description
This image is the face of an air conditioning unit on a barely functioning brutalist building in Belgrade, Serbia. As the camera records the moment of standing eye-to-eye with the structure, it displaces itself from both the location and its former uses, becoming an abstract field of concentric circles—mechanical, rhythmic, meditative. Like the work of the minimalist painter Frank Stella, ‘what you see is what you see’. Yet true to the mantra of all abstract art, it reminds us that the less there is to look at, the more important it is that we look at it carefully. Presented in the context of a former mill, this image invites viewers to consider the continuity between past and present industrial orders: the repetition of labour, design, and systemic influence that shapes both our environments and perceptions worldwide.
